Brunch is possibly my all-time favorite meal, perhaps it is the association with weekend friends/family gatherings after a blissful sleep in ~ always followed by a fun-filled day with hubby. Or perhaps it’s the comforting scent of freshly brewed coffee, crispy bacon, plump sausages, perfectly cooked eggs, chewy hash browns, need I go on? The best brunch spots tend to be your neighborhood joint that has a line up around the block, always worth the wait. One such spot in Calgary is called Diner Deluxe, a 1950s style retro café that serves breakfast (all day!), brunch, lunch, and dinner.
Here are some of the brekkie selections we made on one occasion:
Smoked Chicken, Asparagus, Fresh Tomato & Gouda Frittata | $12.50
Made in a skillet, this frittata was as unique as it was soft and savory!
Sourdough French Toast Stuffed with Canadian Bacon & Sylvan Star Gouda | $10.95
Perfect for those like me who cannot decide between sweet or salty. But be warned, this is not for the faint as it is very rich and heavy, especially for a morning meal.
Classic Alberta Beef Burger with Canadian Bacon & White Cheddar | $12.95
J is not as ecstatic about breakfast food so he usually opts for lunch fare; at Diner Deluxe he is in luck as they offer a wide range of dishes that go beyond the typical bacon & eggs selections. Dinner is equally scrumptious! We especially love the Baked Macaroni with Sundried Tomato, Basil Pesto & White Cheddar Cheese as well as their Veal Meatloaf with Dijon Mashed Potatoes, Grilled Veggies, Pan Gravy & Red Pepper Jelly. Mmm ~ an evening visit is in order! All in the name of blog research that is, ehem…(insert halo here!)
Roasted Yam Wedges with Pink Peppercorn Mayo | $6.50
I absolutely love these generously portioned yam wedges, particularly dipped in the flavorful Pink Peppercorn Mayo. YUM!
